Wanderlust unveiled the winners of its 24th annual Reader Travel Awards in a glittering ceremony held at London’s National Gallery. The 2025 Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards brought together hundreds of esteemed travel industry leaders, tourism boards and explorers for an unforgettable evening celebrating the very best in travel. The ceremony honoured destinations, tour operators and airlines for their excellence across 22 categories. The awards are among the most respected in the travel industry, reflecting the passion, discernment and curiosity of Wanderlust’s global readership. Following a record-breaking 208,000 readers casting a combined total of 4.8 million votes, Japan reclaimed the title of Most Desirable Country (World) for the first time in more than a decade, followed by Costa Rica (Silver) and Canada (Bronze). George Kipouros, Wanderlust’s Editor-in-Chief, commented: “Japan continues to enchant travellers, not only through the well-known icons of Tokyo and Kyoto but through the quieter corners that reveal its soul. Discover the Magic of the Yokote Snow Festival, Akita |
Held annually on 15 and 16 February in Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, the Yokote Snow Festival is one of Japan's most magical winter events, with over 450 years of tradition. The festival features hundreds of
kamakura—snow huts built throughout the city. Inside each hut, locals offer rice cakes and sake to the water deity, inviting visitors to enjoy warm
amazake and grilled
mochi. As night falls, candlelit mini kamakuras illuminate the streets and riverside, creating a breathtaking winter landscape. The glowing snow huts offer a romantic and serene atmosphere perfect for evening strolls. Cultural highlights include the
bonden ritual and panoramic views from Yokote Castle, which opens specially during the event. Whether you're looking for a romantic winter escape or a unique cultural experience, the Yokote Snow Festival offers a warm welcome and unforgettable memories. Easily accessible from Tokyo via the Akita Shinkansen. Read more.
