Visit Kinosaki – Tajima Pottery
Tourists should be sure to visit Itaya Souvenir Shop to see a marvelous collection of Tajimayaki, or Tajima pottery. These ceramics, which include mugs, plates, and vases, to name only a few, mimic the items used in traditional tea ceremonies. Several pieces have been fired with real leaves so that the end user feels an even deeper connection to the traditional tea ceremony.

Kochi Prefecture – Tosa no Okyaku
Have you ever seen people having feast under shopping arcades? Every early March, the city of Kochi hosts the biggest sake festival called Tosa no Okyaku, and indoor shopping arcades are lined with tatami mats and kotatsu, and parks are filled with tables to accommodate all the sake lovers. If you don’t drink, no worries – just enjoy the food and atmosphere! Okyaku in Kochi means gathering/party and this culture of gathering together to celebrate is deeply rooted in everyday life in Kochi. Everyone is welcome at the okyaku so make new friends and get a taste of real Kochi hospitality.

Kyoto City Tourism Association – Unrakugama
Located in Kyoto’s Yamashina neighborhood, Unraku-gama produces unique, high-quality ceramics, all the while adhering to traditional Kyoto styles. Visitors can take a guided tour throughout the workshop and learn all about the pottery-making process; otherwise, people can simply visit the shop to select souvenirs and gifts. The Unraku-gama team painstakingly travels all over Japan to gather the best possible materials, study new techniques with world-renowned pottery masters and research consumers’ evolving preferences. In 1963, Unraku-gama was the first in the industry to use an electric kiln for high-temperature firing.

Tourism Shizuoka Japan – Experience Indigo Dyeing
Experience the traditional art of Japanese indigo dyeing, which was passed down from the Edo period. Visit Koharaya, an atelier that is unique because you can experience the “natural” style of Japanese indigo dyeing. You can learn the history and the traditional way of dyeing from the craftsman, and even bring back your own homemade souvenir. Starts at Gotemba Station - lunch included.
