Fukui Prefecture –
Experience Japan’s Largest Zen Buddhist Training Site
At Eiheiji Temple ―founded in 1244 by Master Dogen― visitors get to walk around as actual monks in training go about their daily lives. Next to the Zen monastery stands the Hakujukan hotel, where guests can practice ‘zazen’ under the guidance of “Zen Concierges” trained at Eiheiji and try ‘shojin-ryori’, the vegetarian cuisine of Buddhist monks. Visitors who spend the night at Hakujukan can also take part in the temple’s daily morning service at the break of dawn.
