News From Japan

Fukui Prefecture – Okamoto Otaki Shrine

Legend has it a woman appeared over 1,500 years ago around what is now known as the Echizen Washi Village to teach townsfolk how to make paper. Now enshrined at the local Okamoto Otaki Shrine, the Kawakami Gozen goddess remains the only paper deity in the country.
Visitors can even make their own heart-shaped ‘ema’ plaque (among other projects) using traditional Echizen Washi techniques at the nearby Papyrus Center washi studio and shop, and bring it to the shrine to make a wish.

Visit Kinosaki – Izushi

Izushi is about a half hour drive from Kinosaki Onsen and makes for a great stop when road tripping around the Hyogo Prefecture. The castle town gives visitors a chance to experience a traditional Japanese ambiance as they explore charming shops and observe the locals’ slower way of life. Izushi Sara Soba is a great dish to try in this town, while Izushi Yaki, or pottery, can be a great souvenir. A private tour with an English-speaking guide is a wonderful way to learn all about this fascinating part of Japan.

Kochi Prefecture – Yosakoi Festival is Back!

The Yosakoi Festival is back! This biggest summer festival in Kochi Prefecture will be held for the first time in three years in a special way taking measures to COVID-19. Although this year’s “2022 Yosakoi Naruko Odori Special Performance” will be only held for 2 days (Aug. 10-11), it is usually held for 4 days (Aug.9-12), attracting around 200 teams with approximately 20,000 dancers from Japan and around the world. Teams rotate 16 venues within Kochi City showing performances with their own costume and choreography.
Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of Kochi City during the festival!
Kyoto City Tourism Association – Taizo-in Temple

Taizo-in Temple has been a cherished site for more than 600 years. The dry landscape garden by Kano Motonobu is one of the temple’s many gems, as it’s considered a great place for contemplation. One of Japan’s oldest surviving ink paintings, Hyonenzu (“Catching a Catfish with a Gourd”) can be found at the temple and often mesmerizes visitors. The Yoko-en, or the temple’s pond garden, is yet another beloved treasure. When road tripping throughout Japan, it’s important to make a stop, stretch one’s legs and relax, and Taizo-in Temple provides the perfect atmosphere to do just that.

Explore Shizuoka Mishima Sky Walk

Recognized for being the longest suspension bridge in Japan, the Mishima Skywalk offers unparalleled views of Mt. Fuji. When road tripping throughout Japan, the Mishima Skywalk lets travelers stop and stretch their legs, all the while taking in one of the world’s most majestic mountains. The Skywalk Restaurant lets travelers enjoy locally inspired bites, such as Mishima vegetables and ice cream made with milk sourced from the foot of Mt. Fuji, before hopping back in the car and continuing their road trip.
Toyooka Tourism Innovation – Hattan no Taki Waterfall

After a relaxing retreat to Kinosaki Onsen, venture further to the lush outskirts of Toyooka City in a rental car and experience the hidden gems dotting the quaint town of Kannabe. Retrace the lava flow of an ancient volcanic eruption during a guided forest trek along a winding river and majestic waterfall views such as the picturesque Hattan no Taki Waterfall. Afterwards, drive over to roadside station Michi no Eki and enjoy a hot spring soak at Yutorogi Onsen before heading to one of the many cozy inns dotting Kannabe for a tranquil evening and a hearty locally sourced meal.
